I understand there was a C4 concept of the ZR2, but I'm thinking more along the lines of the original ZR2 concept spawning from the 1970 ZR1.

If they actually had made the original concept of the ZR2, what model year would it have been? Would it have been a 1971 or even '72?
-
How tacky would it be to make a ZR2 concept clone out of a different year C3? Put in a modern LS7 engine, aluminum radiator, all upgraded suspension, and a unique paint scheme.

I just find it interesting the ZR1 got far less attention than the L88.

Basically, you can do whatever you want. People did this sort of thing a lot, but they never called them clones and never did everything the factory did. The number of big blocks in '63 and '64 Corvettes back in the '60s and '70s would boggle your mind, since all have their "original" engines today.
Since you aren't using the right year car, then it can never be a clone, so just build the car how you want it and enjoy.
You want the high performance 454? Build one. Or use a 502. Or a 427. whatever. Or the modern LS7. Just don't worry about the "clone" aspect since it isn't a clone.
