To read the gauges at night. I went to take off for the beach on Friday night and fired it up. Turned on the lights and no gauge lights. The yworked last time out. Oh well I'll take off on an hours journey anyway. Top down, cool night and no gauge lights. I was just hoping the entire light system would not go out. I thought it might be nice to know how fast I was going and if the temp and oil pressure was OK. Hey the cellphone will light it up. Sure enough about every 10 miutes I just checked everything. Car ran fine no ther problems just no dash lights. I'll work on that this week.
Quick check.... Blown fuse! These are the odd size 5 amp ones.
Another use for a cell phone you might not know about - if it's a camera phone you can use it to see infrared. Try it out - switch your camera phone on, point the TV remote at it, and press some buttons ... you'll see the infrared signals on your phone, it will look like your TV remote is blinking.
I still have not found this information to be useful yet, but it's in the bank none the less. I guess you could use it to test old remote controls?
When my guage lights didnt' work, I just turned the dome light on every few minutes. Gordon, I'm sure your car makes plenty of noise, mine with my Flowmasters, I difintely knew by sound if I speeded up going down the interstate.
Dome light? what is that. In a vert it is just the rear light that was covered up by my bag and the floor lights, pretty much useless unless you need to check your shoelaces.
I tried rotating the light switch also to no avail. It did turn on the courtey lights at full turn but not the gauge lights. Turns out the fuse is blown. Temporarly put in a new style fuse just holding it in there and it did not blow. Maybe just an old fuse that let go. I'll go out and find one today as it is the odd size 5 amp fuse.
On newer cars, when the dash lights go out, it is to let the driver know that the taillights are out. Is this the case on these older Vettes? You might not know it, but you may not have had taillights too.
Anyone know for sure on the C-3's if this is the case?

This fuse just controls the dash lights and that is all. The rest of the lights were working fine.
Did you loose tail lights and side marker ligths also?
Nope just the dash lights. The side marker, headlights and tail lights all worked. Even the courtesy floor lights and the back compartment light worked. It is just the small 5 amp fuse that controls the dash lights only. I just picked up a fuse, not exactly the right size but i'll try it later.
