Default Possible ignition problem

Hello. I own a 70 vette convertible 350/350 4 speed stingray with 76,000 original miles. Everything on this car is stock except for edelbrock intake manifold and edelbrock carburetor. My problem is the car runs rich you can smell it from the exhaust and I'm getting poor gar mileage. I had the carburetor just recently rebuilt and I replaced the old spark plugs with new platinum spark plugs, but the richness smell is still there. My distributor is the original points type and I would like to know if I should replace it with an HEI distributor and coil. If so, what type/brand of distributor and coil should I buy. Would this eliminate the richness I smell? Any help would be appreciated.

No it will not. If the points dist is setup and working properly there is no advantage to going to an Hei or electronic dist. The rich smelling exhaust you are getting is just that. A rich running carb. Even though it has been rebuilt it might be jetted wrong. Your dist if original might need some work but it will not get rid of the "smell" you are talking about.
I see you live very close by. I'm in Marlton.

There is nothing wrong with a points distributor. If it's set up correctly, and everything is within proper tolerances and the curve is properly set it will run great.

As for your car running rich check the carb for correct adjustment.

If you aren't comfortable checking the distributor and carb there is a good shop not too far from you in Mt. Holly called Corvette Paramedics you can go to. Ask for Ron

Thanks for your suggestions. I called corvette paramedics and made an appointment. As soon as they tell me what's causing the rich smell of gas I will pass it on. Thanks.
