There is a gigantic "coffee can" looking thing that was in my 77's vacuum system on the gas tank vent line. One fitting says "tank," and was attached to the tank hard line by a badly decayed rubber hose. The other fitting says "carb," and was attached to a rubber hose that went nowhere. What is this doohickey, and is it necessary for anything important? I'm guessing it's a charcoal can vapor recovery system.
Leaving it out doesn't seem to be very harmful, it hasn't really been connected to anything for the better part of 20 years, at least.
i thought he might have been talking about the patented "Bubba Vacuum Canister." Usually a coffee can of some sort.
Folgers....seriously....I took one out because it was leaking and it was a Folgers can that had been painted black...swear..you could see it through the paint. I'm pretty darn sure it was original.Anyone else ever notice this?

I have mine sitting on the floor in my garage and mine is plastic and says Rochester on the bottom. I'm pretty sure Bubba never got down to my vapor canister.
The one in my '71 is not a coffee can, but some other plastic gizmo (I'm sure it is original). I wouldn't put it past the "cost-cutter bean counters" {sorry, accountants}, to have saved a few pennies by purchasing cheaper coffee cans; I know that the aftermarket suppliers sell them as replacements. Do you really need it? Hmmmm. Well, it is part of the emissions controls system. It keeps fuel vapors from the fuel tank from getting into the air. If you have a state emissions inspection system for older cars, they may check to see that it is there and hooked up (Arizona did, before they dropped those checks on "collector" cars). If state inspection is not a problem and you don't care about leaking fuel fumes to the atmosphere....so be it. Or you can buy a length of rubber hose and keep it working. As mentioned above, if you remove it, you will have to buy a vented gas cap or drill a vent hole in yours.

Sorry guys I was guilty of a "Highjack" I was responding to Hybrid117s comment about the vacuum canister for the headlights-the one under the front end between the headlights.
Matt when you get a minute check yours and see if its Folgers or Maxwell House brand.
ps -Sorry Batman
This thing hasn't been connected properly in 20 years...I think I'll just leave it out and leave the line uncapped. Less dead weight to futz around with.

Bill I'm not sure you know what part I'm talking about. I would tell you to go look on your car but your profile is not filled out so I'm not sure what year you own or even if you do own a Corvette. Here is a link you can go to and look at the part I was refering to and I'm sure you can see how similar this vac tank is to a coffee can. http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...5&dept_id=1255

Reason: spelling
ive got a brand new one for my 75 from yearone. ill sell it for about 25 bucks if you want to put it back on. its not gonna go on my car. it fits 74-77 vettes.
They really didn't harm performance much and they DID help with that fume smell in the garage.
Mine was disconnected also when I got my car, the hoses were dry rotted as well. I took mine out cleaned it up and put a new filter in it and put new hoses on it then re-installed it. It does not effect the performance of the car at all and now the smell of fuel after having driven it and then putting it in the garage has disappeared.
Well, I have the new hoses in place for the can, once I tighten the body mount bolts I'll bolt it back up. I found that the fitting on the carb wasn't capped, it just had the remains of the old hose stuck to it. Vacuum leak...that couldn't have been helping my engine at all...
