I'm replacing my pass side mirror with a remote side mirror on my '79.....and i was looking at it and can't exactly figure out how to get to the inside of the door to pull the nuts off......
well, i don't remember there being a philips screw holding the mirror onto the door....i could be wrong, but i had just taken the mirror apart and there's two torx screws holding the mirror, mirror housing, and arm together. and there's two studs that go through the door and then there's some nuts that goes on the studs that hold the whole mirror on on the inside of the door....
I'm probably mistaken here. I was thinking how my sport mirrors are mounted to my 68(mirrors are from a Camaro) and didn't occur to me that 79 might be different
rexx 78 is right, the windows have to come out. I had someone who knows a lot more about it than me take mine out while I helped, so i'm not sure exactly how to do it.
1st: grab a 12-pack because this ain't a 6-pack task.
2nd: find someone who has real skinny hands and give them the correct year service manual and let them do it.......
Kidding aside, the first side took me like three hours to figure out. I did the other side in 15 minutes. I couldn't explain how to do it, but you essentially need to get the stop removed, loosen the rails and slide the window up and out.
Removing the window for the first time should only take 30 minutes or so. I removed my second one in less than 10 minutes. The window basically is lifted out of the door once it is detached from the mechanism. An extra set of hands may make it easier, but you can do it alone.
From memory:
Raise window to up position.
Take the door panel off.
Remove the top bolts that hold the vertical window track from foreward/aft movement. I wonder if this is really necessary now that I type it...
Remove the stoppers at the top of the window track.
Remove the nuts that hold the glass to the metal piece attached to the up/down mechanism.
Pull window up and out of the door.
