Yesterday morning on the way to FunFest in Effingham, IL at approx. 11:00am our Caravan drove by a very bad scene. The police were there but not the firetruck. This was within about 6 miles of Funfest in Effingham, IL. When this picture was taken the entire doghouse was engulfed in flames. It was a 71. The plates on the Vette were Indiana. They were trying to put it out with fire extinguishers but obviously it wasn't working. By the time the last of our Caravan got by it the fire had reached to the back of the doors and heading toward the gas tank

That sucks. I feel bad just looking at the pics. Makes me sick at my stomach to think that this could happen to my car. Looks like everyone is okay. Hopefully the car was insured at its agreed to value and will be covered.

Dayum, that sucks.
To our knowledge everyone was okay. We do understand that the fire was put out before it got to the gas tank but everything from the back of the doors forward was destroyed.
Wow, that sucks. I've been close to that. On the way home from purchase the headlight switch caught fire. Luckily we got the fire out before there was any damage other than to the dash. Visions like that picture were going through my head when it happened.
what is with C3 owners?!?! I've never seen more topics about car fires then on the c3 forum, and so many pictures to go with them, it makes me feel ill.. but I must know what people are doing wrong so I do not have to experience it myself :P
So sorry to see this C3 go up in smoke. Glad that no one was apparently injured. I frequently get asked or invited to take our '78 C3 on runs to Bowling Green or Mid-America or to shows that are outside of my self imposed travel limits. With our high mile driver that we bought last year, I just have too many unknowns. I've put 2k on it with no problems, but it's almost 30 years old and things happen.
I went to a small show yesterday and put about 50 miles on it. While driving home, I was feeling pretty good (nice day, nice breeze, lots of nice looks and even a wave or two) and started to question my travel limits. I don't have any fuel leaks, but do have afew oil drips that accumulate on the garage floor.
I think I'll stick with my game plan, maybe even get most of those drips fixed over the winter and then, maybe then, I'll venture just a tad further.
Take care

I often see when some newbie post pictures of there engine on these pages and several of us comment on obvious fire hazards seen in the pictures. Like glass fuel filters rubber gas hoses and the fire breathing air filters. As a fellow C3 owner and forum member I feel it is pictures like the one above that comes to mind when seeing a potential fire hazard and to suggest the newbie should be aware of the the fact.
IMHO, it is better to point out a potential fire hazard than to say nothing to someone unaware of what can happen as shown in the above pictures.
I was putting off insatlling a battery disconnect until I saw these this morning. Just got finished and feel way better now. I felt sick to my stomach and it wasn’t even my car I can imagine how he feels.

When I was growing up I was taught and as I have said here before "If you have nothing nice to say "which it seems you never do" then keep your mouth shut. I hope it makes you feel like a big man every time you have something negative to say. I do not understand people like you.
