Default Hood release Problem

Need some help here,
Just had the 78 painted, looks good, took it home and started to detail the odd and ends to compliment the paint job. Went to pop the hood open to look and see if there was any overspray and lo and behold the left (driver side) latch released but the right (passenger side) remained latched. Tried various things to release it with no luck. Does anyone out there have a super secret approach to this problem. I hope I dont have to ask for the services of a dealer. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I know that if one side is on and the other is not, then you can push the hood release in and close the hood back up. As for why it did that, you'll have to look at the wire running through the hood and test the mechanism.

Push the T-handle back in, push the driver's side down to latch it and try it again, this time with a fast complete pull.

If that doesn't work, you have a few less fun options.

That just happened to me at a car show a couple of weeks ago. Boy you wouldnt believe all the advice I got there .Whew! Finally I had a friend of mine hold the drivers side of the hood up a little, reached under the hood and got hold of the cable and pulled it till the passengers side popped open. Once I got it home I was able to do the same thing again, this time by myself. Found that the plastic end to the side to side cable had broken. One place here in St. Charles wanted $42.99 for the cable. It was robbery. I wont say which shop it was. Was able to put a clip on the end until i get a new cable and its working so far...........LT

if you have the driver's side released, not too bad, lift up corner of hood with one hand ,or roll up a couple towels to hold it open a bit and reach in and pull the cable to release passenger side, or there is a small rubber cap on passenger side at bottom of windshield that you can remove and insert a screwdriver to release the mechanism. let us know how you finally did it. good luck.

I also have a 78 and I am on my third cable replacement. The original and the second one both broke at that cheap plastic clip that the hold down screw goes thru. As stated by others if you can sneak your hand in under the hood on the drives side and can feal around behind the latch you should be able to grab the hood cable. If you grab that cable and pull on it the passenger latch should release. Dam I wish they would make these with a metal hold down on them. PS I just bought a new one from Wilcox for about $ 20.00

Yes. This is a sensitive subject, due to possible Corvette theft. It would be better if we did not put this on the internet. E-mail on condition it is never posted.

Just posted these in another thread. It shows the latch and the push in plastic cap that covers the access hole.

Remember on the passengerside you only need to go in about an inch. You need a real short screw driver. anything more then an inch and you have passed the stricj point.
