How can you check an alternator to see how many amps it puts out?

Take it to a local parts store like Autozone, Oreilly, or Napa. They will hook it up and test it under a load to tell you the output.

Default Most alternators have the capacity stamped...
on them somewhere....of course that's assuming someone hasn't rebuilt it.
