Time to do away with the cc distributor on the 81. I bought an earlier style HEI with an external coil kit and MSD 6A box. Now the dilemma is where to mount the MSD box on a 81 that is stone stock under the hood? Everywhere you look something is already there! If anyone has pics of theres mounted let me know. Anybody mount it in the storage compartment behind the seats?
I've heard of those who have installed an MSD in one of the storage compartments, but I can't think of acually seeing such an installation. I think it might make for excessive wiring runs, but I'm no expert when it comes to that.
In my '69 I installed the MSD behind the passenger side of the dash where it's invisible, but with an '81 you don't have that option since it has a glove box.
Some people find a place inside the inner fenders, but that must have been a real PITA to install.
On my 73, I painted the box black and stuck it to the left of the steering on the outside of the firewall. A nice flat vertical spot. I ran the thick wire from the distribitor with the vacuum hoses to the box.
You need to remove the lower shielding to get access. Used double sided tape and been their for years.
Painted black and under and outside of the brake booster you can't see it.

On my 72 I put my 6AL box in with the battery. Can't see it at all. It won't matter where you put it there will need to be wires extended. Since there are wires to go to the battery and wires to go to the distributor and coil. So it is 6 to one half dozen to another.
On my 69 I put it just outboard of the expansion tank in the passenger fender well...this was done to simplify wiring...it has been there about 7 years...
Not a good pic,but you can see the red MSD box behind expansion tank...
Do a search of this Forum as there was a simulkar post last year and there were lots of pictures of guys installation.
Storage compartments behind the seats are too far away. 425 VDC will exhibit a greater voltage drop over that length of wire. Keep it close. Mine is on the passenger side wheel well, behind my expansion tank.
