Default Pulling engine and Trans on 68

I'm pulling my engine and Trans. I think I have everything unhooked. How do I disconnect the 4 speed shifter from transmission? Can I just disconnect the linkage at the transmission because I think there is a seperate bracket holding the shifter and it is not mounted to transmission, but I am not sure. Do I unbolt the two bolts on the bottom of x-member to allow transmission to lift out with engine? It ssems there are alot of bolts down there where the exhaust goes through the frame. Thanks

From what I remember...

Just disconnect the shifter linkage rods from the transmission. When you remove the engine/transmission, the shifter and its linkage rods will remain in the body. (The shifter is mounted to a bracket which is in turn mounted to the corssmember. Next you will have to remove two bolts that mount the rear of the transmission to the crossmember. These two bolts are the ones that go through the transmission rubber cushion and also these same two bolts hold on the U shaped bracket that is used as hanger for the two exhaust pipes.

Mark the position of the rod tightening nuts so that you can tighten the rods back up on re-instalation and keep the shifter in alighnment. Another option is to not unscrew the rods from the transmission levers, but instead remove the levers with the rods still attached.
.............
Since you have jacked up your car to remove the engine/transmission, the shifter rods will be hanging down. If you lower your car, as I did, you can bend one of the rods when it comes in contact with the ground. I accidentally bent my 3-4 shift rod. I ordered a new one, only to find out later that the new rod was for a 69 and up C3. It was an inch shorter than the 68 rod. I discovered this when I couldn't align the shifter. Your 68 shares its shifter rods and mechanisms with the 63 to 67 Vettes.

I have a 68 427/390. I didnt remove the shifter linkage. I just removed the shifter itself. Theres 2 bolts that hold the shifter to the linkage. You can get to them from the inside if you remove the boot's.Then theres 2 bolts that go from the trans mount into the trans. They are up under the mount. You will see when you get in there. Then it will slide out when you lift the front of the motor up. You do of course need to dissconnect the Z-bar and the clutch linkage from the trans. Its actually really easy.

I tie wrapped my yoke to the trans before I pulled it. If the yoke falls out the fluid will spill out.

You have to remove the radiator and the fan ect. Theres a braket that holds the shroud on at the top in the middle. You have to take it all the way off. I broke my shroud when I tridt to get it out. They are expensive so take your time..

You pretty much have to put the Motor and tranny back in at the same time.. Good luck..
