So Saturday was a beautiful day here in Maryland; matter of fact the whole East Coast is enjoying a long Summer. I decided to go visit my buddy at his custom wheel shop and figured I'd take the 81 for some exercise. Everything is going great, spent the day at his shop helping out. Close up the shop and I head home. I get within 2 blocks from my house and I have to stop at a red light. Take the car out of gear and wait for the light to turn green. Well when the light turned green I pushed the clutch in and it doesn't feel right - the peddle goes almost to the floor before it feels like it has and pressure on to it. It wouldn't go into first gear at all, I finally got it to go into 2nd gear and limped home that way. Guess I was lucky it did this only two blocks from my house. Question is ......what did I break? Worst case scenario say it's something internal and the tranny and clutch have to come out - how much am I looking at?
Have someone press the pedal with you under the car to watch for articulation. You're basically making sure the linkages are all adjusted properly and the fork is going full travel. You may just need to adjust everything and maybe replace a few bushings.
For reference my clutch was $300, the transmission rebuild was $1300 (had to replace syncos & 2nd gear) and I spent another $100 or so on a new fork and shifter rebuild.
You pricing may very as I was lucky enough to know a transmission shop owner.
I would definitely do as suggested and start with checking teh linkage. My ball stud broke off at the block a little over a year ago, so I had to limp the car home with no clutch at all. Fortunately when it happened I only had 1 stoplight to go through and I laid way back until it turned green.
Also check the seat on the frame where the 'Z' bar sits. Mine was missing a retainer clip and no matter where I would adjust the clutch it would eventually slide front again meaning I had to stand on it to change gears. Check out a year one catalog and they have a blown-up diagram showing all the parts you should have there. Good luck!

From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
Check you linkage as stated above, get under there and have someone depress the clutch pedal, you should be able to see what is broke / not adjusted properly.
I recently broke the z bar to frame bracket, I have a bolt on one and it is 15 bucks at Corvette Central
As stated above there is a small clip that holds the end of the z bar in the bracket, if bubba has been there before you can bet the clip is gone and it is only a matter of time before it works it way out
