Default Numbers Matching????

I am looking at a 71 C3, considering buying it. The seller claims #'s matching.
How do I verify this?
Can someone point me to a link or help steer me in the right direction.

Thanks In Advance for any input.

That depends
Engine, Trans,Frame match the vin number.
But the next
Are all the casting numbers fall within the time the car was built
Heads
Intake manifold
Exhaust manifolds
Carb
Distributer
alternator
starter
Diffrential
The numbers matching can go on and on

For quick and dirty numbers matching.... verify that the engine number and the VIN match. Engine number is on the engine "pad", on the passenger side of the motor toward the front of the car where the head bolts to the block. One of the numbers there should match the last numbers in the VIN. (VIN is on the drivers side windshild pillar if you haven't goten that far.)

All the other "numbers matching" is a pain, and in my opinion not as important. Not many people are going to crawl under the car to verify a transmission, and I personally don't want a 35 year old alternator on my car.

Thanks Green73, I see you're point regarding all the components it can go on & on....I will check the top of the motor near the head....so if my Vin # ends with let's say 780092...that sequence should be on the engine stamping too?

The only reason matching #s are important is because someone tells you its an LT1 and a turbo 400 then you get home and find out its a 305cid, 200 metric trans.
Otherwise as long as you figure out what it is before you buy and don't pay for a premium for non#s matching.
I personally would take a new 350 crate engine over a wore out 35 year old grease pile.

A good source is the "Corvette Black Book" which is available at most larger book stores or via Amazon.com. I used this prior to purchasing my latest car adn it was very helpful with regard to drivetrain numbers, trim and color codes, options etc. Good luck!

Here is a website with some pictures of places to find numbers on 70 Corvettes. 71 should be the same.
