My '69 BB sat for 3-4 weeks, and I forgot to hook up my battery tender. It ran FINE before I let it sit. I went to take it for a ride on Saturday, and the battery was about dead. I hooked up the BT over night -- barely better. I bought a new battery -- 670 cca. Got it to turn over, but it ran like hell, and left me stranded when I tried to take it for a spin (usually grumpy for a while when I let it sit).
It stalled a couple times, and I could ony get it to fire with a jump. When I did get it to run, I noticed that the voltmeter was pegged to the right at +40. Don't mean to sound dumb, but is this telling me my alternator is shot?
You need to put a volt meter on the car to determine what is going on.Also what do you mean by running bad? (skipping, too rich ,etc...)
Sounds like a charging system issue. Check the volts at the battery while the car is running, my guess is the alternator or regulator gave up. If you have an HEI system that is even more evidence for that with the poor running.
