Problem; rear wheel/suspension?
Hey all.
Well on the way to work last night the car was swaying a little bit. I was wondering if it might need alignment. On the way back home this morning it crapped out.
Rear wheel is laying Far in at the top. Pronounced wobble in the steering from it. Pulled over and as I slowed it got worse. When I stopped and got out it gave me a puff of smoke. Called my daughter for a ride and tried to limp it home. Went to do a 3 point turn and it locked up so I couldn't reverse. I was able to pull forward again and park on the side. Back at the house now getting a jack to pull the wheel so I can see what's what behind it.
So......
Any predictions?
Don't see anywhere the tire rubbed on anything. Can't see where the rim might have rubbed but for sure something in there isn't happy.
Hopefully I can get some sort of idea after the tire/wheel is off.
Back in a bit (hopefully!).
You obviously have something busted in there. Look at the strut rods and their bushings and mount bolts. They connect the bottom of the wheel bearing carrier to the diferential and provides lateral support.
The Half shafts provide support for the upper half of the link. Look at the stubs in the rear end, make sure they are secure and have not worn completely off insude the differential

Take a couple pics with it up on the jacks
Pulled the wheel. LOTS of top bottom play. Also play in/out play in the outer U-joint. Neither tire nor wheel are abraded. Good brake pads. Back side of rotor is smooth. Front side is roughed up. Front caliper housing centered on the rotor but the rear outside caliper housing is so close to the roughed outer rotor surface I suspect it's dragging on it. Struts look good or at least straight. One nut was loose but no shiny threads. I'll look at the stubs when the half shafts come out.
Limped it, and I do mean LIMPED, a few blocks to the speed shop at which time the wheel/tire had a horrific angle to it! Being as this car is the way it is/was, I had wondered before how to tell if you need to rebuild the trailing arms. I think I know now. I suspect the wheel bearing is toast.
No pics at this time. Poor thing goes up on the lift in just a half hour or so but took the ride from my daughter first. Pushed button, garage door goes up, I walk in past the last dead DD.

Heh, everything is like 5 hours away.
I doubt I could get to the edge of town, and that taking an hour or so.
I'll keep in mind the guy in Garland for when this is fixed. There's always something ya know.
Got my daughter's van/SUV thingy to get to work tonight. She left it in the driveway whilst I was asleep. Guess I have more time to work on the house now instead of the car.
At least I can get what I think is a broken tranny mount fixed at the same time. It would shift and the front U-joint would eat into the tranny tunnel. I know it was eyeing my right butt cheek too.
Mine has been in the garage for the past month. Driving home felt swaying and heard a grinding noise. Took wheel off and saw metal shavings. Trailing arm was cracked down the middle and the flange was rubbing against arm. I figured if ones bad might as well rebuild both.
