Pete,
I just made new compartment doors. On my '72, over the years the doors had been wet, had swollen, etc, so I used the old doors as a template and made three new ones out of 1/2 inch marine plywood (the originals were constructed of press-board.) Then you can cover the new ones with ease.
My 73 has fiberglass doors. When I redid the carpets the battery door carpet came off OK... but the other two doors did not cooperate at all. I was only able to get 2" strands of carpet off at a time. Seems like the carpet was there when they press molded the doors. It's overkill, but I used an air chisel and the carpet gave up the fight pretty fast! Just have to keep the angle low so that it doesn't dig into the door. Any surviving carpet fibers got buzzed off with a angle grinder and a scotchbright style pad. I used the weather strip adhesive and a brush to glue the carpet on. The spray adhesives were too thin in my opinion.
Mine are plastic?
Same thing on mine GREEN73, battery door carpet came right off.
I have the center door soaking in 3M adhesive remover, if that doesn't do it Im pulling out the air chisel. Good idea.
They are also fiberboard/pressed wood if I recall.
Another suggestion is to take a single edged razor blade, get an edge started, then just draw the razor across between the carpet and the base board slowly while pulling up on the carpet. It may take a while, but I've done this in other situations with good results. Also, sometimes the edges are glued down more than the center, so you may find that you get in about an inch or so, and you can then just pull the carpet off.
The rear compartment doors on 73's were wood until about Jan.73 then the plastic was used. Wood replacement doors were sold a few years ago for about $30. but I have not seen them lately.
You are not going to use the doors so try putting them in a five gallon bucket of water and see what happens after a few days just for laughs.
Any old Corvette that has leaked water inside the carpet is falling off.
If they are glued to the pressboard or wood, then getting the carpets off may damage the wood underneath. It may be worth it just to get new doors and start off fresh.
