Default Another week - More Progress...Frame is bare

Alright...this week's goal for this rookie was to get down to the bare frame. Mission accomplished - with help from friends...

Out with the old lump...

On to removing the front suspension...

and finally....here she is....bare frame!!

I have better pictures of the frame - but photobucket isn't liking me right now....sorry for that. I'll try and get some up later.

Now i need to look and see if i can find a local DIY sandblaster...or go it my own (which i have the stuff for...but i'd rather not do the whole frame...ye ol' compressor might not like me much after that.

To my fellow novices - I highly recommend using a spring compressor for removal of the front coils. i'm sure the "jacked a-arm" method would work...but having never gotten this intimate with a suspension before, the coil compressor made the job an absolute breeze (and I felt a lot safer using it)....

I welcome questions and comments gang......

One more thing...for those who have POR 15'd the frame...how much did you have to get to handle the job?

I think you will get by with a quart of por15. That paint covers real well. I top coated with semi gloss as it started to tack up.

A quart is more than enough. Did a long wheel base Land Rover a few yrs ago.

Those kids did a nice job of stripping that frame! If you sandblast the frame yourself be prepared to spend a LOT of time. I must have used up 10 weekends blasting my frame. Part of the slowness was having to stop periodically to vacuum up the sand and screen it for re-use.

Of course the dangerous thing here is that after you get your frame cleaned and painted everything else that attaches to is is going to look like s$$t so you will be cleaning, painting and rebuilding many other parts that you maybe hadn't planned on. The end result is worth it however.

Your much further ahead if you look in the yellow pages under sandblasting and find a do it yourself place nearby. You can take all your suspension, wheels, frame, bumper brackets etc there blast it in about 2-3 hrs and have no mess to cleanup when you get home.
