so i'm finally trading my 700r4 for a 2004-r with someone i found on craigslist. i need to rebuild it, and i will probably do it myself.
is there anything specifically i need to know about installing a 2004-r in a vette? i know it goes in easier than a 700r-4. about how much HP stock will a 2004-r handle? i was told this transmission came out of an 88 monte carlo 305. i will eventually add vortec heads on my engine and do some other mods, so i'm looking at maybe 350-380 hp max in the future. i'm also worried about torque. i'm on a budget...i don't want to use cheap parts, just slightly used parts. what would you recommend for a torque converter?
Can't answer about the rebuilds nor HP handling, thought I do't imagine a stock rebuild will be a problem with that HP.
I put a 2000 to 2200 RPM stall converter in my stock 81 with a 200 4R and was very pleased with the improved performance and the streetability. Nice compromise.
I am just now putting a 200 4R in my 73 with about twice as much HP and torque as the stock 81. I'm going with a stock Grand National torque converter which chould be just over 2000 stall.
Remember that the stall will be affected by your engine and gearing as well as your intended use. Planning to spend more time in bumper to bumper traffic or at the drag strip?
Just had a 2004R built by local shop here in Tacoma, WA. They said stock, designed to handle mid-200's hp. Mine built will handle near 500 (they said) I chose a 2400 stall TC, based on their rec's. I'll be running an "out of the box" ZZ4 (355 advertised hp, 405 lbs-ft torque). Lots of info lately on this swap, Bob Onit just completed a swap in a 73(?)...
I am considering the 200r4 as well doesit use the same TC as the 350??
It is diffrent... If you plan on rebuilding youself get a manual and you can also get a video before you take it apart. There are some up grades you can and should do. It's is an interesting trans to work on.
Just swapped 400 out of my 74 and installed 2004R. Swap was pretty easy. 400 Cross member and drive shaft were correct. Had to change yoke. Got TC lock up kit and transmission throttle valve kit from bowtie. Had to mfg bracket for column lock. Well please with results. Good luck?

i use my car as a daily driver, but i also want the extra power off the line, so i guess you could call it street/strip.
