Default Aerosol Primer Question

I have begun the process of re-dying my interior back to bright blue from black.

I tried using Corvette America's spray primer, but it came out of the can very thick, and with drops, no matter how much I shook it.

Then I tried spraying the dye directly over the black after thoroughly cleaning it and it seemed to stick OK and looked excellent.

Do I have to use the primer, and if so what's the secret to getting it to spray nicely?

I have used a dye to restore the dash of a 66 mustang. I went from red to black. I cleaned it and applied the dye directly to the dash with no primer. When I finished I was amazed at how good it looked. So from my experience the primer was not necessary.

That's the way I am leaning.

I tried another part....removed the shine with 0000 steel wool, then cleaned with lacquer thinner and sprayed dye.

Looked excellent and is very difficult to scratch off, so I'll probably forget about the primer.

I thought the dye was great. It made it look like I knew what I was doing

I used SEM dye on my interior and did not use a primer. It went on great and hasn't given me any problem in 2+ years.

I am using Corvette America dye.

SEM was my first choice but they couldn't get the color right. There is a formula for bright blue in their catalouge, but it didn't match.

When I sprayed my lower dash and console I did not use primer. But I did use a spray on product called Duplicolor adhesion promoter. It goes on clear. I was happy with the results
