Do you have a 68? Didn't the 76 use those plastic puch-in pins?
Were you talking about the splash guards on the r. and l. fenders, triangle in shape, bolts to i.fender and under rocker panel? If so mine has a rubber seal on it that is stapled....dale
Starting in 69 they used the press ins,I believe.I would do it like you are doing.I did a 73 BB TA awhile back, and they had staples going thru the metal inner fenders...???Hmmmmmm.....I woundered HOW they do that!!??
What is the best technique to replacing these? Do you just fish each staple through one at a time and fold them over?
What I did on my 68 was hold the splash guard in place, then from the wheel side I used a paper clip to mark the guards where the staples need to be.
Then I drilled the guards with a 1/16th bit.
I used tie-wire to make my own staples. I was able to cut each piece
2" long, bend 1/2" legs leaving an inch between the "legs".
Your measurements may vary!
Put all your staples into the guards, slide everything into place and start folding the staples.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. Now I need to find out when they started using those push-in deals.
This is what we are talking about right?

I am not sure when they used the push ins but on my 76 they are staples that i got from a supplier with the new rubber seal.I think some of the guys are thinking about the inner fender. They are sometimes called guards.

This is too funny 11 posts in and nothing for the original poster.
Budman,
My original staples were pretty rigid. I been told the factory used some type pnuematic stapler. Sorry I don't have a pic but I'll describe what my original staples looked like. On The engine side, the staple was flat against the flap and on the wheel side, the staples were bent over with the ends having a radius to them. The was a slight gap between the ends and the ends sorta dug into the wheelwell fiberglass. A side view of the staple would look similar to a incomplete letter B.

Exactly how I did mine. The "B" shape bending of the staples to duplicate original was achieved by bending the legs over "with a slight twist" using small thin needle nose pliers.
