Manuals are fine for cruising, but I'll take an automatic on the track or road course any day.

Has to have 3 pedals 4speeds = great, 5 speeds = better, 6 speed = I can't wait.

My first vehicle was a 4 speed S10. The only way I could make that thing feel like a sportscar was driving the manual. It did great brakestands. Try that with a 2.5 l automatic.

My vette and my wifes 5.0 both had to be manuals.

I guess the first Vettes weren't sportscars, they only came in Powerglide automatics. I have a 4 speed L82 Silver Anniv and an automatic 2003 50th Anniv Convertible, and they're both fun to drive and they're both sports cars. Ask my ex-wife. She may get off on a mid-life crisis rant, but you'll get the info.

rexx78, only 3 pedals? I'm looking to add a 4th, but I wonder if you guys who really believe an auto can keep up with a stick in a straight fight on a road course have any idea why I'd need one.

I`m like you I guess. I never had a problem with my Deuce, it`s a 4.56 and sometimes I just leave it in 4 and slide the clutch out. But normally it`s either a 1/4 or 2/4 shift because of the gear.

Did you ever hear Steve Miller's "livin' in the USA?" It starts off with the sound of a car taking off from the line. It just wouldn't be the same with an automatic!

When my fiance and I had our choices narrowed down to 2 cars, one stick and one auto, we weighed everything back and forth for a couple of days. At the end of day 2, my non-car nut high maintenance sweetheart said, "Baby, Corvettes are supposed to have sticks". That's what I wanted anyway.
As for faster - a good manual gear banger will outrun a slushbox. Less parasitic power losses means more hp to the tires. The auto will be more consistent, though, and it's easier on the rest of the drivetrain as long as we're not talking transbrakes, etc.
Where's the fun in dropping it in gear and going? Nothing compares to rowing thru the gears at about 7 grand!

maybe not sports car but funn none the less

Default ever sat in traffic in a manual?

After 3 knee surgeries and sitting in a lot of Houston traffic, I just can't do manuals anymore. I drove sticks all the way to my last knee surgery about 5 years ago, an it was fun(when I wasn't in traffic).

Yes but they quickly realized that they wouldn't survive if they didn't come out with something to compete with the real British Sports Cars with the standard shifts. Remember Corvette was almost sent to it's grave in the early years.

When I went looking for my first (and only) Vette, my choices were severly narrowed down because my price range put me in a rubber bumper Vette, but it absolutely had to be a stick shift. All my old cars I had previously owned were autos and I wished they all were 4 spds. Now, my DD is the only auto I own.

Actually many of the early C3 race cars were verts with hardtops.

I have an automatic because I want to cruise and not have to push a clutch in. I have had both, and it depends on what you are after.

Yeah, well while you guys are shifting gears taking the turns with one hand on the wheel, I'll be focusing on my driving instead of what gear I'm in. Don't worry though, by the time you get to the finish line I'll have had time to bake a cake for you as a consolation prize.
