Default Steering Lock Platepuller Help

I have just finished overhauling my 77 tilt/tele column and I am getting ready to install the lock plate. I looked at Jim's drawing to make an installer to get the sprong compresed and clip installed. What I cant figure out is looking into my center shaft I have no threads for the puller do thread into. Has anyone one out there used an installing tool? Here is a picture of the home made tool from Jim's papers.

You are missing a part. My lock plate removal tool has a tube that threads onto the shaft after the retaining nut is removed. The rest of the tool you have pictured threads into the tube.

this might be helpful:

you can pick the tool up at any OReilly's for usually under $20.00

I hope this helps.

Rick I used the compressor the others suggested. The only thing you need to do is get a 1/4 20 set screw about 1 inch long, Thread the set screw in make sure the rod is in first so is will hold the shaft from telescoping out. Then use a regular lock plate spring compressor. There has to be threads in the shaft for the star screw that locks the tele.

Jack and guys thanks for the ideas. I went to Ace hardware and bought the set screw. Mine was 5/16 diameter anyway I locked the telescoping rod and Autozone had the loaner tool and it was real easy to install the clip.
