Default 1970 Driver Door Question

so i pushed down the door handle and hear a clunk as something broke and fell down inside the door - the result is that while the handle moves up and down just fine - it is no longer connected to whatever it connects to actually push the latch to allow the door to be opened.

as a complete newbie, can someone briefly outline the steps (along with tips, tricks and tools) for removing the inner door panel - and take a guess at what I will likely find? - many thanks, ed

Unscrew the front & rear screws at the top of the panel. You'll need to get a special tool from an auto parts store to remove the clips that hold on the interior lock ****. There's a screw behind the handle, which you need to pull as though you're opening the door to get to. Unscrew the door pull handle. After these are off use a wide blade screw driver to GENTLY pry the velcro like attachments along the bottom, front and rear of the panel. There may still be a plastic vapor barrier so remove with care to replace when you're done. Once inside you should see what came loose.
You should get the AIM for your year, 17 bucks from Mid America. There's exploded diagrams of the entire assembly. Also catalogs from Paragon & ZIP & Ecklers have diagrams. Eckler's latest catalog has photos of the interior of both sides of the door.
Good luck.
Glenn

thanks glenn - to be clear and follow on questions:

- other than the front and rear screws, there are no other fastenings between the inner door panel and the door itself?

- is the panel "hung" on top of the door such that once everything is loose you lift up to get it off?

- how does the window lever (manual) come off? - pried? - screwed?

- if there is a plastic vapor barrier, is it stapled? glued? - tips for removing (e.g., heating if glued) without trashing it?

thanks!! ed

There's 3 velcro style tabs along the bottom, one approx 1/3 of the way up in front & back. You should be able to see them.
The panel may need to be lifted up a bit.
The window lever also has a clip that you need remove first.
The plastic vapor barrier is held on with a caulk type material. Use a small putty knife to slowly remove.

Sorry, just had to laugh with you -- "something fell down inside door" -
welcome to the wonderful world of Vettes. You're going to have lots of
fun. By the way the window lever has a special tool to get the clip off-
or see one of the catalogs to see the type of clip and how you might
remove it. By the way - I've had my "70 for about 10 years and when
I first got it I almost got a license plate that said --" Honk - If Parts
Fall Off". Have fun.

Glenn many thanks

my goof...my car is a 72...the AIM i have is a 70...but have assumed little changed in this area...good assumption?

- as for the lock (p.K145, K8) assume it is the clip numbered "12" that requires the special tool...such that the **** is pried off, the clip removed and then the plate ("11") is pried off? - or is the whole thing pried off as an assembly?

- on the window handle assembly (p. K142, K5) is it just 9, 10 and 11 that are on the cabin side of the door panel? - such that the housing ("8") is behind (door side) of the panel? - according to the Note with 9, item 9 fastens with 3 tabs that are bent onto the panel (the "K-3 Board") - so maybe that piece stays attached to the panel and just 10 (plate) and 11 (handle) come off? - if yes, the same tool for the lock **** is used under the plate to take the both 10 and 11 off in one go? - or do you take off the handle first (using the pry tool) and then the plate (using the same pry tool?

thanks for this...hard for me not to feel like an idiot as i start on this journey...as per the post above, i typo'd it is 72 ... there is a 70 basket case sitting in the garage (hey, why just jump in the deep end...might as well just jump into the ocean!) and it is the 70 AIM i have...I need to get a 72 AIM - again, thanks for the post - happy to see that I am not alone if having things fall off!!

Do fill in your profile so we know what year/city/etc. I would hold
off on the '72 AIM because from 69-72 the cars are mostly the same.
(The 68 was the first year. The 69-70 are almost identical.) And note
to remember the AIM's were done the year previous. Don't know if
you're status but a good book with clean diagrams, how to do things,
systems explanations, etc. is "How To Restore & Modily Your Corvette
1968-82". I used it extensively.

There are 2 clips that attach to the door panel and screw into the bottom of the door. One in the lower rear and one in the lower front corners. The clips hook into a slot in the door panel.

Hopefully you have small hands. Tha access holes are pretty small.
