Now that the Vette is painted, I need to do something about the exhaust covers. Found new-repro for about $2300(ouch!). Any source recommendations? Also was told they can be restored. Any leads? Thanks.
The outside pieces can be purchased separately from what I have seen although they are still expensive. Usually the insulator stays in good shape but the chromed metal pits over time.
The side exhaust on my '73 I purchased back in '82 and although the car never goes out in bad weather and sits most of the time inside a dry garage the metal has some pitting mostly behind the front wheels.
I heard all kinds of different stories over the years about getting the side covers restored. Some say you can't restore the white metal with new chrome. Maybe someone can clue us in on that subject here. No matter which way you go it is going to be costly. Owning both C-2's and C-3's over the years I have to admit I like the way the earlier C-2 Covers where made with aluminum over the C-3 chromed covers. They definitely take more abuse with the weather and last a heck of a lot longer without getting all pitted up.
A couple of ideas - try eBay and/or forum ads for a used set. I was able to pick up a nice pair a few years ago at Corvettes@Carlisle in PA. Try any swap meets or car shows in your area, you might get lucky.
Good luck and the original sidepipe covers look TERRIFIC on the C3s.

They absolutely do look good on the C-3 because they were made for the car. I like the factory look myself over the chrome hooker header side exhaust look that just spells out (AfterMarket). Hope I didn't offend anyone with my thoughts here. Its just my opinion being a long time Corvette owner for 37 years now. To each his own.
