Leaning toward the Classic White. Seems like Corvette "season" is over around here, so I probably won't get to see one up close and personal.
Should get my '80 to the shop this week.
Will post when it's done.
white pearl of some sort would be nice. but with single stage paint there is no clear coat. so you can only paint solid colors with single stage paint. because you cannot sand and buff single stage pearl. you would be sanding the actual pear. thus making the paint streaky when you buff it out. solid colors sand and buff fine because they are solid, no pear or flake. now if you can paint it perfect no dirt no peal no sand n buff then you can if they can make the color. also you can put pearl in wht all day long, it wont do anything to white. white just eats it up. all wht pearls that i know of except house of color are tri coat. wht coat, pearl coat then clear. so you will need base clear job to get wht pearl done right. but a lot cheaper to just get wht single stage no pearl.
When I got my '77 painted I was curious about adding a little pearl to the mix. The paint and body guy told me that he would do anything that I wanted......but...think about this. If you get a small scratch, ding, dent, crack, crash, ETC. It will be nearly impossible to get the pearl color to exactly match unless you repaint the entire car. When they mix a batch of paint w/ pearl, the entire car is uniform using the same batch. I guess that a really good (and expensive) paint/body shop could do it, but it just makes things harder.
GOOD LUCK and post pics when you get it done.
I agree. I have spoken with several painters. I mean really pros. They hate Pearl colors because they can not be matched, and are a pain.
Stick with a good old common white. Also white is hard to paint because you can not see it that well when you are laying it on.
The earlier Arctic White, or the Classic White from the chrome bumper years (carried over from the mid year vettes) has a more refined look. I owned a 1980 original White w/Camel Tan interior and two (one 1971 and one 72) Classic White with one w/Dark Blue interior, the other w/Red interior. They are nearly the same but the earlier color has a few drops of Blue and it makes a big difference. Check out my 30 year old Arctic White with absolutely no cracks, chips, bubbles - perfect because the foundation was a priority and necessary for a long lasting stand out topcoat!
White and Black are a bit more difficult to paint with great results. You can paint White on a car and it looks plastic and like a cut rate Maaco Job. That same White with the right primer sealer and the right air pressure can look stunning!
My 81 is white and interior is red, love the combo. My paint guy is going to repaint the front bumper, previous owner hit the garage door at some time. Will see how the new paint compares to the car, hopefully will look ok.
