Default Ground Strap Location?

Can anyone tell me where the ground strap is supposed to be on a '72 coupe?

I have been looking all around the driver's side frame rail near the door hinge pillar but I don't see it and I don't recognize it from the picture on the kit I bought.

The picture just says left underbody support bracket but I can't tell if its showing the front of the car or what.

I have the '72 Shop Manual and the Assembly Manual but couldn't find a diagram of the ground strap location in either of them.

Thanks in advance.

It bolts to the inside verticle of the frame rail just below and to the outside of the battery box. Clean the frame location with sand paper to silver metal and coat the location with electrical (light bulb) grease and torque down well.

There are many grounds. What are you in the process of doing? From what you said I'm guessing you are looking for the ground strap around the #1 drivers side body mount.

That sounds like the one. It's braided copper with a eyelet on one end and a squeeze connector on the other end.

Hey ----

Just as an FYI ...
My 72 (1 owner 45K mileage) did not have that copper braided strap installed.
The only grounds on the car were as follows:

1. Frame rail to antenna mounting plate
2. battery ground cable to frame rail.
3. starter brace bracket to motor mount area.

plus several ground wires from harnesses .....

Up to 71. A friend of mine up the street has one of those NCRS Judging manuals and it says 72 doesn't have them.

It did mention the short braided strap though.

Bill -

It is interesting that your LS-5 doesn 't have them. I began to wonder if the braided plug wires made the strap unnecessary.

I can't trust my wiring because Bubba had his hand in it. I fixed most of it but there are a couple of wires coming out through the steering column firewall hole, one is orange the other is green. I'm pretty sure GM would not have routed them quite that way. It also appears the TCS wire has been snipped.

Thanks guys for the responses.

It would be interesting to compare bb grounding to sb gounding to see if that really is the difference.

Near #1 body mount on the inside of the frame.

Ok, I know nothing about body mounts. I'm assuming #1 mount is near the driver's side hinge pillar. How is it accessed, via the kick panel opening in the footwell?

cc,

There are no holes drilled in the frame rail on my car, near the driver foot area. So they either messed up at the factory or 72 BB cars with radio did not have that ground strap included.

The strap is not long enough to be screwed under a fuel line clamp/bolt - also the bolt hole on the ground strap is much smaller than the bolt that goes into the frame.

The one in the kick panel is #2--#1 is just below the brake booster or the washer res. bag.(on the engine side of firewall)

Ok, I was under the car yesterday looking at that one and there is no ground strap clamped to the body mount vertical center wall nor is there a hole on the inside wall of the frame for the bolt and eyelet.

It's sounding more and more like this is a small block only thing.

On the drivers side the #1 body mount is in front of the firewall. In the area of that metal pocket in the birdcage is where one end is screwed to the pocket the other end as I recall is in the side of the metal bracket that is welded to the frame. It will be total black and hard to see not brite copper color. If you see no small screws in this area their was not one installed. They are hard to see.

Well, i reached up in there and did not feel any ground strap nor any hole in the frame rail. I could see the end of the body mount bracket with a flashlight but there wasn't anything there.

It would probably be easiest to get to by taking the side grille off and going in from the outside.

In any case, looks like there was never anything there to begin with so guess I'll sell the kit.

Thanks all for your responses.
