How flat or slim can I go with a 10inch sub enclosure? Its going in my 68 convertible and I,ll need room for the soft top to fit inside. I have the soft top out as well as all the interior I guess I could lay it inside and measure the space. How would one of the tube type sub enclosures work up against the back wall ?

There are a few guys that have the bass tubes. I personally don't like them, but it all comes down to personal preference. The pancake subs work okay too when tight space is an issue, but slim subs lack the one characteristic that gives a sub the ability to create low frequencies...Xmax, or the distance from all the way in to all the way out. Excursion. The lower this number, the worse the bass.

Obviously, this is just a suggestion and in the end you can do what you want, but I suggest you leave the 6x9" speakers where they are and don't incorporate them into the Vette. The goal here is good sound and those speakers will not give you that.

A sub in the storage box is an okay idea if it's firing down. A sub needs a surface to fire at for good bass. Firing up at the roof from the floor is just too much distance for a good sound. You can flip the sub and have it fire down into the box, but then you have the basket and magnet sticking up in the cabin.

If you fire it up, using the storage box as the enclosure, make sure you strengthen the walls of that box and use a lot of sound deadening material.

First, you can cut a single DIN opening in your stock gauge bezel and install a good modern head unit.

You'll need a good quality yet budget minded 4 channel amp that can be mounted on the floor or back wall of the storage area.

A single pair of coaxial speakers are both good for the budget and can sound great when quality is maintained. These should go in the kick panels for best sound, a simple round hole for the speaker, and a grill will go over the outside to protect the cone.

Next a small but efficient subwoofer. This can go in a small box off to the side of your storage area, and still leave you room to store your T-tops. I have made a few of these boxes for forum members and would be happy to help you with one too.

You'll need some wiring, but all of this stuff is a good mixture of high quality and low price. Value is the key here. Yes there is less expensive equipment, but the quality suffers greatly, and you may end up doing it all over again down the road, spending more than if you had done it right the first time.
Wow, good stuff here. I've got two JL Audio 8W6's sitting around (I have 3 but one rattles), I was going to use one, but that MB Quart looks like a great deal. MB makes some good stuff and that looks like a bargin. I'm skepticle about buying a sub I haven't heard, but I like MB's stuff.

A few guys on the forum run that same sub. PM Curtis74 about his. I helped him order and install his stereo. His words were..."It's like being at a Nickelback concert."

I'm installing many of the components DB suggested as we speak. Word of caution though...I bought the Cadence TXA-3004 from an eBay vendor for about ~$100. Turns out it was a factory reject that they acquired in a court sale. They were advised by Cadence not to sell them because they are a legitimate fire hazard. If you get a TXA-3004 that the heat sink at the top is flush with the body, it is NG! Make sure the heat sink actually extends outside of the casing like the picture at the Cadence store. I ended up buying a different amp (directly from Cadence) since the vendor was not willing to give me a refund or a replacement unit. Bottom line, use the reputable dealers with an established web presence and you'll be fine.

Enjoy and best of luck. I'll post more pix of the DB special when I'm through (soon!)

Pioneer P5000UB head unit

Boston 3 way 6X9
Pioneer 10 Subs
JL Audio 500X1 amp for the subs

This is system is nothing to fancy but it does get the job done!

Default idea for guage cluster

I hate the gauge cluster, so I'm in the process of removing the glove box (since its so small anyways) moving the guage cluster over to the glove box (should fit I think) so I can look at it when needed, but otherwise hide it away. Then, I will have the whole center dash to have a dvd/navigation unit or something cool placed in the center...I may have to make a border to fit around it, but anything would look better than worn out plastic that it comes with...

82 BTw. I'll post some pic when I'm done
