I was wondering if anyone could tell me a quick and easy way to disable my 77 Vette if I had to leave it in a motel parking lot overnight. I can lock the doors, and the original burglar alarm does work, however, my car can be started with or WITHOUT a key in the ignition. I thought about disconnecting the battery, but that is kind of a PITA. Does anyone know of a quick and simple trick under the hood that would disable the car from a would be thief??? Thanks in advance.
Kenny
First of all, fix the ignition. No key is probably OK for your '77 Catalina beater, but not for the 'Vette.
There are many ways to do this. If you had an old-style coil you could just take the coil wire and/or the rotor in the distributor. You could interrupt the purple wire to the starter and/or the red wire to the distributor (start and power). If you have slotted wheels you could run a cable through both front wheels and lock it making it very hard to drive off.
I had a 76 once that I could not lock the doors on and put an inline fuse into the nuetral safety switch on the shifter and the fuse was tucked under the side of the console. I would just pull the fuse out when I got out, until I got the locks fixed.
If you are traveling to an out-of-town car show and lots of other cars will be there overnight, see if you can take up a "collection" from other car owners and hire a rent-a-cop for overnight surveillance. Personally, I wouldn't leave mine out overnight in an unprotected/unsecured area.

There was a post on this - do a search.
Many suggestions.
INcluding certain kill switches that needed to be in place before the car would start.
Example.
You need your hi beams on and door open to start the car.
Something like that.
Disconnecting the battery would be the simplest in my opinion, BUT I would go further than that anyway...
I had a 70 nova and the door lock was broken . I bought an automotive switch from kragens and installed it so that it cut off the coil like was said above. Then I hid it in the glove box.
If you dont have all the chrome shrouding around your Distributer You could un -hook the connector to the firing system. It should just un click. Cause any good vette THEIF knows where the batt is and could hook the Batt back up in seconds.
You can disconnect the starter wiring harness from the main harness. One pull and its done. You dont have to lay on the ground or anything, just pull it loose and barely tuck it back in so it looks like its connected, that way anyone who gets under the hood wont even notice. in the morning give it a shove back in and off you go.
