Poor-man's camera mount is a good idea. Remember to take into consideration that steel pipe is heavy. For some mounting applications you will want something not so heavy.
I've always filmed my small vids in a let's say 'adventurous' way ...i really want to get a mount but i dont want to change camera (not to buy one of those bulky cameras...)...i have one of those extra light Nikon small pictures and vids cameras, is it there a light mount that will match it? on the bottom it has a screw where i'd guess you could fix a standstill to hold it, the mount should go there?

I use a Canon SD 400 ELPH for most in-vette vids...the Camera mounts via the bottom screw mount you mentioned...
All the camera screw mounts are the same...I have several film cameras and a Sony Mini-Cam besides my Canon digital above...all my camera mounts/tripods work with every camera...
Just screw your NiKon to the screw (pic below) and tighten knurled ****.....
