Well, it's Christmas time, and I'm thinking about getting a gift for myself
I'm looking to get some sort of Digital Video Camera that will have good enough quality to use in the car. I want to mount it on the dash at the dragstrip and such. I ran one last time I went, but the quality wasn't so hot, and I had it duct taped around the rearview mirror coughBubbacough. Also, it needs to hook up to my computer.
Looking to be in the ~$200 range. If it still took regular pictures, that'd be great, too, because I'd like to use it for more than just the car. I know it's a little off-topic, but you guys are all smarter than me, and it's kinda Corvette related. Tell me what you think.
Pretty cool, but I was thinking something a bit more "normal". The whole separate recording source is a little out there, and I'd like to use this camera out of the car, as well.
But if I was a die hard racer at the track every weekend, this would definately be the way to go.
heres what i use, it's a sony DVD camcorder w/a built in digital camera n it works awesome, very clear n you don't have to connect it to your computer if u have a DVD r/rw u just finalize the disc in your camera n throw the disc in your DVD r/rw n do what u want. to mount it in my car i just stick the suction cup on the side window or on my astro top and adjust it however i want it. oh it also records in 5.1 dolby digital. i bought mine 2yrs ago so i'm sure u can find some on ebay or craigslist for $200 to $300.

I was looking for something too. The cameras they have are the same I have here for security, pretty good stuff. I was also thinking about incorperating it into a carputer system. The system I have at home has a 4 channel DVR card, but the card will not fit in a Mini PC or Mini Mac.
So, I am still looking. The Carputer thing still has my attention, It cad easily do the music and navigation thing, Bluetooth, In Car network should I need that etc..
IF I can find a DVR card, it would complete the security thing and provide some fun driving Videos.
There are also periferal cards to do some of the car stuff, Fan, AC control, whatever. Something I would like to find is an application for the GUI for insturements, Maybe just an engine diagnostic program would do, I just haven't played with it to know

That's the ticket! Any model number on that puppy?
Whatever you choose for a camera, please buy a good external microphone to record the sound. I'm sure you have seen countless videos of people showing off their engines running only to have the exhaust sound like somebody banging a tin can with a spoon.

model# DVD403 it films in widescreen or 4.3 and is 3.0 megapixels n takes excellent pics it was the latest n greatest until HiDef came along. also very user friendly.
Cool deal. I posted this in C5, as well, because I figured a good number of people raced their cars and therefore had cameras, and the only response I got was that I needed to spend more money.
Done deal. Found one on Ebay buy it now for $250, called seller and made sure everything was how it should be, and sprung on it. Sony MSRP'd it for $1200!
I bought a Chase Cam a few months back and love it. I've taken some great video and use it every chance I get. Here is a pic of it installed followed by a couple of videos I took with it.

Got this from Chase Cam in San Diego: It will clamp just about anywhere and I can use extensions...without extentions,I can mount it to rear view mirror to support my Canon SD 400 for vids...
This vid was taken with a Canon SD 400 ELPH...side window clamp...

Rich those are some nice mounts u got there, which one do u like the best?
I like the Chase Cam clamp mount over the sticky pod....I plan on buying the Chase Cam suction mount soon as it is more compact than the sticky pod and more adaptable inside the C3....and will hold a mini cam....
Neat is the extensions from sticky pod will work with Chase Cam mounts as all cameras have the same size screw mount...

yeah my mounts do the same thing, i can transfer my mounting system to my motorcycle handlebars as i have a ujoint mounting ball on there for my camcorder n also in the van i've got a ball mounted rite on the dash for filming scenery in the national parks, works xcellent specially w/sony's antishake. then throw in 5.1 digital sound, awesome! i like yer clamp mount the best also for the vette over the suction cups.

Man, I'm glad you guys started this thread. I've been wanting to make a Corvette video for 2 years, but never got around to thinking it all out. These camera mounts look great. I'm going to buy one pronto.
One other thing I googled and thought was neat, is a poor-man's steady-cam camera mount. Here's the link. For $14, you can build one, too - which I plan to do also. I can't wait for Spring, when I can put these ideas to the car.
