First check and see if there is a tach filter between the distributer and it. Should be under the hood plugged into the distributer. will look sort of like an old points condenser. If there is one, I would try bypassing it first before I did the tach board.
Contact board member ACECO. He fixed the circuit board on my tach in my 79. Mine read too high, and his fix was cheaper than a new circuit board. He's very honest and great to deal with.

I've chatted privately with a few forum members in the past about our circuit boards. The tach works great after the new part, except under heavy acceleration, the needle goes to zero like it's dead. Let off the go pedal and normal services resume.
Either way, getting the circuit board out is easy. Changing it is even easier.
thanks for the advise! I took apart my speed/tach lens, unscrewed the tach face and it looked like a fire was present...black residue on the green plastic...did not know the circuit board could flame.
where is the best place to get a board quickly...my son wants the vette back to drive!!
I've got a brand new tach board precalibrated for a 78/79. Never been installed. PM me if you're interested, I'll sell it for $65 plus shipping. I'm taking a $10 loss, but I found the problem with my tach before I changed the board. If your tach is stuck on 2k even with the switch off, you may have other problems, it should go to zero when you turn on the switch if you have 12 volts going to it. Maybe the 12 volt line is what burned? Anyway, let me know if you need the board I have. Good luck.
