Default Cost of Re-Chroming Side-Pipe Exhaust

Does anyone have a ball-park idea on how much it would cost to re-chrome a pair of factory side-pipes?

Thanks!

Perhaps you could call some Chrome Plating Shops to get an idea.
Try Librandi in Harrsburg Pa.

Try filling out the rest of your profile and maybe someone in your area can help better.

I'd be interested in knowing the cost also. However, you'd have to probably take your sidepipe shrouds to a plating shop for an estimate.

One problem is that the factory sidepipe shrouds are chrome plated aluminum castings. You need to find a chrome plater that can plate aluminum. To plate your shrouds, a chrome shop must first remove the old chrome by a reverse chrome plating process. This will result in deplated aluminum castings. Next they have to be anodyzed, and then can be chrome plated by pretty much standard chrome plating processes.

Another problem with the aluminum castings, is that if the original chrome has pitted, most likely the aluminum smooth surfaces with have pits in them also. I think its going to be much more difficult for the replater to hid the pits. In a steel part or die cast part, large pits can be filled with lead and smoothed.

I've often wondered if these parts could be rechromed by metal vaporization deposition. Anyhow, trying to find out how to replate some parts, like these shrouds and also the 1970 front grill pieces is one of my future projects.

Aluminum pits can be brazed over with the right rod. Zinc "pot metal" die castings can be repaired the same way.
