Jack the car up and wire brush the bottom of the diff. There should be some stamping codes there.

OA = 3.08
OD = 3.36
LR = 3.36
OB= 3.55
OC= 3.70 Barring any previous owner gear change. These are factory codes.

Something is not right here. The driveshaft should turn a minimum of 3 turns which would indicate a 3.08. Jack up both wheels and turn the driveshaft and count the driveshaft rev. per one turn of tire. This is the most accurate way. Make sure both wheels are off the ground. The numbers are another way if you can be sure noone has been in there and changed the gears before you.

If you could turn the wheel relativly easily with one wheel still on the ground it sounds like your posi unit is smoked. Probably could use a rebuild. A new and properly rebuilt rear will take a LOT of effort to turn only one wheel.
Also make sure the trailing arms are not hanging down. The ujoints will bind up making it almsot impossible to turn the wheels. Support the trailing arms somehow.

found mine the other night. Bottom of the diff side, not the cover, handstamped so you may have to look close.

Put a 5/8 socket under the trailing arms and the frame to set the wheels at ride height before you spin them. Also, if you can get the cover off, count the ring gear teeth and then divide with the number of pinion teeth to get the Raito. But, in most cases the code on the case will tell you what's in there. See above for the codes.

Your positraction unit is shot or somebody swapped in a 68-69 open diff.

An open differential will operate exactly like you describe with the driveshaft spinning about only half the ratio.

The snap rings hold the side yokes(axles) in place. If you replaced the brg's and seals then I hope you checked the pattern as it may have changed once you removed the case.
Rings can end up in the spiders and gears and that could lock them up and break the diff.

That is a stone stock posi with those nasty snowflake clutches. You have it out polish and tune it now.
