Default Birdcage

Ok, I am going to show my lack of knowledge. I'll seen many post with references to the birdcage. I have no idea what this is or the purpose. Where is it located and what is it?

I had no idea what it was either, I found the search feature and there is a ton of threads about the birdcage. Its a steel frame that is around the windshield and drivers compartment and it is very prone to rust.

These pics are for a C2 but it gives you the idea. It's the steel cage around the drivers compartment. The windshield frame is one of the places that rusts out the worst.

The "Birdcage" is the metal (or rust) frame that goes under the fiberglass body and supports the cockpit area of the car. the T-top, front windshield, floor pans, transmission hump and door posts are all parts of this structure.
It is very prone to corrosion and a real pain to replace.
I'm doing a body-off rebuild and part of that operation will be the birdcage replacement.
