How difficult is it to remove the windshield on a 75 coupe. Do I need any special tools or should I leave it to the pros. I want to check out the metal and prep before new windshield is put in. Also on factory air models, the 2 grates behind the back window. Any thoughts on making this solid as all I can see it as is a rain collector. Thanks for your thoughts.
Thanks for the advise. Breaking is not a problem as it is cracked from po. Any tips as the best way to start?
Obviously, take all the chrome trim off first.
Try to get a wire thru the seal from the inside and work it back and forth across the top and down the sides to break the seal.
Without the special type of wire, it will get hot and break on you. So, just use another piece when that happens.
Then push it out from the inside. It will break across the bottom. Certainly wear eye protection in case any glass chips pop off.
Once you get it out and the channel stripped and clean, let us know if you have any rust holes. If your W/S has been leaking at all, that's a probability. Post pics if you can.
after getting all the trim off, you might also want to take out the dash top.
I used WD-40 and a putty knife to remove my windshield. Worked very well and didn't break the glass. Spray the WD-40 on the glue, really soak it well and then wait about 20 minutes then you can start using a putty knife to separate the glass from the frame.

I had my windshield out in about an hour or so.
Good luck!
I'll have to try that next time.
Still, hard to do at the bottom edge of the glass depending on the year your doing. On a C3 it's tough.
Safelite installed my windshield. I asked them to come out and remove the old first and then come back a week later to install the new one. This gave me enough time to clean and paint the window frame. They didn't have any problem with the request and saved me from having the remove the old one.
THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GROUP OF PEOPLE I DEAL WITH, RIGHT UP THERE WITH MY FISHING CLUB. I WILL TAKE SOME PHOTOS IN ABOUT A WEEK,HAVE TO GO TO DELAWARE THIS WEEKEND TO SEE MY SON. PROBABLY TRY THE WINDSHIELD IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. HOPING FRAME IS GOOD. HAVE NOT HAD ANY LEAKING AROUND THE WINDSHIELD IT IS JUST CRACKED ALONG THE BOTTOM. FIGURED BEST TO CLEAN, PRIME AND PAINT BEFORE NEW ONE IS PUT IN. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP.
On removing the grates: I don't know if it will cause any problems to leave it but at some point in my car's history mine were covered up and I have paint cracking perfectly in the shape of the vents. It's pretty unsightly. I don't know when this was done so I can't say how long it takes for this problem to materialize. I'm beginning to get the same problem where the previous owner shaved my door handles . That was about 3 years ago. Maybe they just did it wrong or maybe it's better not to cover any openings. My .02.
