Hi, New to the forum, nice site! This question is for the sidepipe guys out there, im currently running the 4" hooker set-up with the 1.78" inserts and i dont like them, too restrictive.im in a toss-up between the hooker 2.5" Max flows or the Sweet thunder 2.5" inserts. Anybody running the maxflows? are they too loud? im not looking into the spirals. i have a stock l48 vette. thanks for any imput.
Thanks for all the input. i guess im looking for more less restriction, better sounding inserts on a budget. the sweet thunders and hooker flow max are a bit cheaper in price than the spirals. have other goodies to buy as well. just wondering if anyone was running them........thanks
I have Hooker sidepipe headers and maxflo's on mine and love 'em. They have a deep powerful sound without being too obnxious. I noticed a decent increase in throttle response from my L48 with them over the true duals that I was running before with 1-5/8" Summit full length headers.
with my maxflows I could not even talk to any passenger that was with me in the car especially with the t tops on.
I also got hookers and they are ceramic coated and I have noticed that small rocks kicked up by the front tires have chipped thru the ceramic paint and now I got small rust spots showing on the pipes just behind the front tires.
Has anyone else noticed this problem on their ceramic pipes??

Yep, same problem on mine: 'bout five years old though. Will try for a recoat this summer
On the inserts: I have reverse flow inserts and a weak 350. This results in very little noise unless I floor it, then the sound is awesome!
If the new heads and camshaft don't bring a little more DB, I'll probably go for spiral flow inserts as well.

I run the sweet thunders on a 10:1 327, the sound is awesome and the price is good for the units. For my small block, withte 2.5 in inserts, the amount of restriction is acceptable, thought I have heard other sya that for the big block, this is not the case. The spirals seem to offer the the least restrictive option while also the most expensive.
I had the reverse flows and hated them, then I bought the max flows from a fellow forum member and I love them.
I dont think the sound level is too bad but I put Dynamat throughout the entire car (all but the t tops) and it helped alot over what I have heard in other C3s.
i ran around with empty side tubes for a few weeks two summers ago(before the new top end) and the car was really loud, so much so that you couldnt hear a gun go off next to you at anything about 2500rpms, it sounded awesome but I was worried about getting a noise pollution ticket so i put in some sweet thunder 2.5 in inserts, on a side note i emailed the guy that owns the company and he said they now have a 2.75 inside diameter side pipe insert, if anyone cares.
thanks for all the great comments onthe inserts,i guess the majority says the spirals are the way to go. i think that i will save up a couple extra bucks and get em! i put my pipes on in 2005. i removed the original inserts the other day. wasnt to bad of a job. Once
i removed the pipe from the collector,i then sprayed penetrant in both ends of the pipe ,and let it work in. then i made a padding of rags on the garage floor, very carefully in dropped the collector end of the pipe squarely on the pad until it started to break free.more spray, soon one end was out. once you get one end out, the weight of the insert will work with you until the unit comes out.i just took my time as to not damage anything.i did find a light coating of rust in the pipe. i will try to sand it off and coat it with someting before i put in the new inserts. any suggestions on what to use? has anyone gone this overboard? anti seize?? just trying to prolong the inevitable.........
