Here is a sound clip of my sweet-thunder inserts(2-1/4") on my 302/320rwhp cobra. I had Mike at Sweet-thunder fabricate the inserts to fit into my FFR pipes. They have a really awesome sound-much better than the glasspacks that i had previously. I lost 5rwhp, but it was worth it to me because my left ear was really starting to suffer.
Yes, they are certainly loud enough to grab attention, but they dont get anywhere near the obnoxious level, plus they have such a good tone. I added his larger diameter(2-1/4" ID) original style sidepipes to my 65 Corvette as well. They sound really good and arent nearly as loud as the blown out original style 1-3/4" ID pipes that i had on my car a few years ago. That plus they add hp since the originals were so restrictive. Funny, i remember when i first added the original sytle small Internal diameter sidepipes and i thought that i was gaining power over my original 2-1/2" undercar system. No no, i had no idea that the original sidepipes had that much smaller internal diameter. Thank goodness for people like MIke that improve the original designs.
I've looked at the hooker inserts, but i have only seen on style that has a funnel shaped entry. The rest have that extremely restrictive and poor designed entry-flat all around with the tip of the entry to the muffler sitting out 1". That has got to kill a lot of power over the funnel design.

I wonder why hooker doesnt make a smooth transition for all of their inserts. I talked to a guy that installed the inserts in the pic above and he said he thought they were too quiet so he cut them in half. HOwever, he said that even after cutting them in half that they were still not as noisy as the glasspack inserts.
Sound is a subjective thing, but I wouldn't describe the Maxflo mufflers as quiet. Before these I ran a pair of magnum 2 1/4" glasspacks. They weren't really louder, just different. The Hookers have the deepest tone of any of the inserts I've tried

I purchased the STS baffles and hooker sidepipes last November and was worried that they might be too loud from the get go.They weren't at Idle but the engine came alive at acceleration.Last week I drilled a 1/2 hole in the center baffle tube and found what I was looking for.Worth every penny
Yes!! But just loud enough for me. If I wanted to go louder I could drill a bigger hole or just remove the cap that you're drilling into which is basically a freeze plug.Like I said I found my sweet spot with a half inch drilled hole.
I have Hooker sidepipe headers and maxflo's on mine and love 'em. They have a deep powerful sound without being too obnxious. I noticed a decent increase in throttle response from my L48 with them over the true duals that I was running before with 1-5/8" Summit full length headers.

I dont think the sound level is too bad but I put Dynamat throughout the entire car (all but the t tops) and it helped alot over what I have heard in other C3s.

I Love my max-flows perfect deep rumble at idle really shows off my "lopy" cam and it feels like it added a ton of hp after running open pipes for a year!! AND they keep the pipes MUCH COOLER... no more burning flesh
Yes, but don't the swirl/auger type inserts have a tinging metallic sound??
Thats the problem I have with my STS inserts. Had the max flows, way to loud. I guess I'll keep searching someone has to have one thats not to restrictive but sounds good.
I'll let you know how my project turns out with the sweet thunder 29-1/4" length and 2-1/4" ID inserts.
I had heard from a few people that made special muffflers with DNA mufflers that they had a very specific metal sound. I've never heard a car with the auger inserts, so i have no first hand knowledge. MY experience and testing is limited to glasspacks, cc inserts, and sweet-thunder inserts thus far.
