Remove the inner door panels.
Remove the screws that hold the plastic water diverters...if they are still installed, and remove them.
Remove the three screws that hold the latch mechanism against the bulkhead and let it fall out of the way a little bit giving you room to get your hand and a tool inside.
There are two 7/16"? nuts, well, one is a stud, that hold the door handle in place. Remove those and the handle comes out from the outside.

Did I miss anything?

You have it right DB with the latch loose you can lift the handle up rod and all then disconnect the rod fron the handle fron the outside.

Sounds like you don't have an AIM manual and/or GM service manual. That's something that you really can't do without if you are going to do some of your own work on your car.

i have the 72 gm manual and wanted to change em. brake assembly. it told me nothing about the bolt behind the storage compartment so i gave up and put it back together. i only found this out on this forum so to me this forum is much more valuable than the manual i have.

Good deal. I went to my AIM and, apparently, the door is a sub-assembly so it doesn't show the detail on the handle either. You did the right thing. Glad it worked out.

yeah the driver's door was crucial because the hand went down about 1/4 of the way then stuck. i knew what the problem was, but everytime i had to go to my passenger door and reach to the other side to open the door. my passenger door sticks too a little because of some play in the handle, so i'm going to replace it this morning.
