Default Engine Temp Sensor w/AFR Heads (Pic)

Well, I had to beleive I would run into things like this, but do they sell sensores with a smaller thread diameter so I can fit it into these AFR's?

Yes they do. I run a small one in my AFR heads. I had to work with the parts guy to come up with a sensor that would fit and work with the gauge. I can't remember what the number is but it was a later model Vette that took the smaller sensor.

Get a temp sender for a 1982 Corvette.

or...... you can pick up a brass male/female adpator at the hardware store, and use your original temp sensor.

That's what I had to use with my Vortec heads.

I guess I also find myself wondering how exactly does it work? Does it simply check the temp of the coolant and if I do use an adaptor, would it be moved too far outboard to be effective?

You don't need an adapter. Get an '82 Corvette sending unit, which is like $15. If goes in the same head and will fit the smaller bung.

Or.....just use the intake manifold port at the fwd end with your stock sensor.

That's what I ended up doing with mine.

BTW, if you are ordering your new heads directly from AFR, let the tech know which size temp. sensor your're using and they will drill the correct size hole in the stock location for you.

I just drilled and tapped my AFR heads for 1/2" NPT to use the proper sensor for my temp gauge, and my SPAL fan temp sensor also needed the same size, so I did both heads the same. Not a big deal with the heads off the car and if you know how to use a drill and tap.

Well, I bought the '82 sensor and now the electrical connector is different. I take it that I need to get & splice in the correct one right into the new harness?

Always something...

I think that your stock terminal will still fit on just like a female spade terminal would. Give it a shot. If not, is a simple, cut, strip, crimp, and you're done.
