Default Steering Wheel Button

Can someone tell me how to get the emblem out of my steering wheel button on my '81. I want to paint the button but I cant figure out how to get the emblem out, it seems like there are rivets holding it in.

The cap assembly consists of three pieces as shown above. The die cast cap itself has three posts (you can see them above.) The emblem and the retainer were placed on the posts and the posts were spun over (similar to a riveting operation.)

The cap assembly is quite fragile and a lot of owners break the end of the posts off when they pry on the cast cap itself instead of reaching under the cap and prying on the retainer. You can place a dab of JBWeld on the end of the posts to reattach the parts.

Jim, would it be possible to cut the posts off so they had a smooth end, then drill and tap them for a small screw like a 4-40? That's how I re-installed my door panel lock **** plates which were originally installed in a similar manner.

Batman,
I have heard of people drilling and tapping the posts. You better have a drill press or a mighty steady hand, the posts are quite small in diameter.
