hi everyone, i have a problem and im hoping that one of yous may be able to help me out. anyways i own a 81 vette, and a few weeks back well my wife was driving home she came out started it up and it was idling high and she wasnt able to kick it down so she drove it home that way. now when i start it up it still idles high and wont kick down, and its blowing black smoke, ive checked the pvc valve, and replaced the egr valve today and still the same. one thing i have noticed is it idles better with out the air breather on. so any ideas that i may be able to try, im not all that mechanically inclined but rite now im willing to give it a try
thx all
A choke that comes off too late could exhibit one or more of the following symptoms: black smoke from tail pipe, poor driveability when cold, poor gas mileage, misses, or rough idle.

hi and thanks for replying. i've thought that it may be the choke, but figured i'd check the pvc and egr valves first, and seeing that didnt help in anyway, and seeing my car is parked in the underground, and with it running so poorly i cant even consider taking it out to a garge until it runs smoother. so that means i need to attempt this challenge on my own. now by chance have you any knowledge or experience with stuck chokes, as in where i start and what i need to be looking for.
oh by the way thanks for any help you can offer me.
You need to get the "Troubleshooting" tips for that carburetor. It is a different "animal", with the electronics interface. Maybe someone here on the Forum can supply a copy; or look on the web for info. Good luck. {P.S. sounds like a sensor malfunction or possibly wiring connection fault}
Here is the info from the 1981 Chevrolet Corvette shop manual. This what i would go by. Hope you can read it. If not PM a fax number and I can fax it to you.

hi and thanks again for replying back to me. i have a haynes book that i use as reference, but i find its not very detailed when it comes to the carb, and seeing that no one has touched it but myself since this problem occured and i haven't adjusted anything on it. and that possibly its just the choke sticking. well lets say thats what im hoping it is.
