I have a question about side pipes. It may be a dumb one but I still need some clarification. I have a 79' with a 350 out of an early 70's camero. My question is what do I buy the headers for, to match the engine or the car?
The engine you have may have the same exhaust exit as the stock motor in the Vette you have, but the shapes from the header tubes from from the shape of the car its self
I had this issue when I installed a 1970 corvette engine in our 1979. The speed shop recommended I go with headers for a 79, the reason was the headers are designed to clear everything in the engine bay and steering. Installed them without any issues at all, everything fit perfect.
This should be the same in your case, even if it's a Camaro engine, you'll need to fit your engine bay. Talk to your supplier, and ask them if there are fitting issues, you can return them for a different set.
Good Luck
Buy them to match the car. Are you buying Hooker sidepipe headers, they've used the same part number since the early 60's just depends if you want black, chrome, stainless or ceramic.

A small block chevy is a small block chevy. Unless you are running aftermarket heads with raised exhaust ports, every Gen I small block that Chevy sold had the exhaust ports in the same location. That includes 305's, 1970 LT-1. 1975 L-48 or that 400 out of a Monte Carlo.
I haven't been a Camero guy for along time, but the only trouble you could run into is accessory placement (If you got the engine to fit without changing brackets). Alternator and A/C brackets could require some creativity. You'll probably be fine with the P/S regardless. /:\
