I have seen pics of members here who have modified thier crossmebers to run bigger exhaust and to run the exhaust straight. How did you modify it and what all is involved to make this modification. Car is a 75 with a th400 so i have the removable crossmember. Please post pictures if you have them. Thanks in advance.

That may have been me. I modified the crossmember on my '80 to keep both pipes on their own side back from full length Dynomax ceramic coated headers. I have a Photobucket album of pictures with a guest password. Photobucket will send you the link to your e-mail address.

If you don't need to see a lot of picture, maybe these will give you enough of an idea of what I did. Note that I was trying to preserve as much of my previous dual system as I could, so I have a couple of bends and welds you wouldn't have if you started from scratch. The are close to sequential order. I can send you more details is you want.

The cutout marked using spray primer and a rounded 1x4 piece of wood as a stencil:

I cut the crossmember with a 3" air cutoff tool in about 30 minutes.

Here is the cutout with a piece of 3 1/2" exhaust pipe welded in.

Modified crossmember ready for pipes. (I took the opportunity to treat the surface rust inside the crossmember while I had the inside exposed.)

The H-pipe balancer ain't pretty, but it was cheap and it works. If I had started from scratch, I would have used a Summit universal 2 1/2" H-pipe kit.

The sound quality from my still digital camera isn't the best, but this clip gives you an idea of how it sounds with Flo-Pro mufflers.

cool thanks for the pics, but my crossmember is different i have 2 holes in it already where the factory exhaust went. Im just wanting to see if its worth the trouble of making it where i can have straight pipe vs. buying a bunch of madrel bends to route it around the th400 into the original holes. Hows the H pipe im also thinking of that or an x pipe.

MN60vette has the right idea. I am going to do this to my 69 when I get back to working on it. Maybe this pic from Dragvettes website will help you.
