There are 2 plastic slides that are used on each side of the slidding lid.

These tighten up the slack and require slight force to open and close

Corvette Central part #233021 $8.00 for the set

Greetings!

I recently refurbished my shifter bezel, stripped and repainted the
ash tray door, replaced the lighter element and cleaned up the
chrome and surrounding metal including the plastic slides for
the ashtray door. I still need to replace the ashtray - too rusty.

In the first pic, looking from the side, between the ash tray sliding
door and bezel are the plastic slides - (1) in each side of door.

In the next pic, the back side of center bezel.
Remove the (4) screws that mount the ashtray assembly.

The third pic shows the ashtray assembly off the bezel.

The (2) plastic slides have a narrow slot where the door slides
through - up and down, acting as a track. They may just be gummed
up with old grease or one or more of the (4) screws on the back may
either be missing or just loose. If the slides are missing, then for sure
buy a set.

Rudy: My thanks as well. I was just about to ask if anyone had closeups of the ashtray assembly.

If I could ask you one other question. Did you replace the "woodgrain"? I have a 72 with Deluxe interior but the woodgrain insert is not mounted. I have the piece but am wondering what adhesive to use. TIA

I used a little silicone grease on the slide. This type of grease is good as it does not attract dirt likes oils and WD40 do.

I am not sure if yours is the same as my ’69, but I had to replace a spring clip that attaches to the back of the sliding door for the ashtray. If it was closed every time I would step on the gas it would slide open. If that is your problem it looks like from the other pic’s that it would work on yours also. This may not be your problem but I thought I would mention it anyway.

There's no spring per say although I do have the little clip your
speaking of on my door as well. See pic below for location on door -
at the center bottom.

I would reccomend getting it and the slides if you don't have them.
As for the wood grain. I would try using a clear urethane glue called
Liquid Fusion. Its about $5.00 but well worth it. Its non foaming, nontoxic,
100% waterproof and fast drying. Like super glue, a little goes a long way.
