Default Side Pipe Question

I am back on getting side pipes for my '81. I am leaning towards getting these
Hooker Super Competition Side Exhaust (headers and mufflers) for $1699 at Mid-America.

My question is how do they mount to the sides with the rocker panels

I believe those tabs can either be welded or bolted to the frame rail under the rocker panel...you just take them off then re-install them when the pipe is on. I looked into this a while ago and some mentioned having to notch the rocker panel at the collector. Granted I'm going off answers I got from my own inquiries...I'm sure someone will clarify.

The rocker panels should be removed to expose the frame behind the panels. The tubes mount to the frame with rubber insulators to keep down vibration. Then the rocker panels are put back on. My set looks and sounds great. Get a set of baffles or good mufflers.

The tabs are bolted to slotted holes in the frame (they should already be there. Then the rocker panels go over that. No welding or drilling required.
Found the instructions

you could probably get them for less from summit, jegs, or the jet hot store, as for the tabs, you need to remove the rocker panels, bolt the tabs on and then put the panels back on, your next concern will be inserts.

Mine came with "T" bolts and the short side goes into the frame with the treads exposed then the loop tabs (already welded to the pipe)on the pipes mount on these T bolts with rubber bushing on each side of the tab and nut and washers on the outside of the tab. very simple installation.

my frame has a hook hanging down, and on the pipe itself has a loop with a huge and wide rubber bushing it slips into

You will love the sound but watch out for burning your legs when exiting the car. Many wifes, kids and friends can get a serious burn that takes years to fade and some time it never does.
There are many kinds of heat shields on the market shop around for the shields you like.

Check this link.........

Summit has them for cheaper, you just have to purchase them seperately. You'll save about $250-300 depending on what muffler and finish you get.

I had side pipes on my '68. They were wonderful - except for the burns on my legs. No matter how careful you are you're going to burn yourself. I finally gave up wearing shorts when I drove the car.

Just get some heavy-duty long pants when you take your Corvette for a drive.

Summit's Pricing
Chrome / Polished Polished SS
Side tubes $326.39 / $419.95
Headers $999.95 / $999.95
Mufflers $177.99 / $177.99

total 1504.99 / 1593.89

Looks like Mid-America's are Chrome...Any advantage to going with Polished SS vs Chrome? And am I missing anything?

I got the jet hot coated sterling finished ones for 1100 for everything (headers, sidepipes, inserts) they run alot cooler will keep your engine compartment cooler, and you wont get leg burn nearly as easy with the coated ones!!! call jet hot and tell them you are from the corvette forum and they knock off 100 bucks so they should be 1100 to your door!!

Hello.

I have two new sets of Small Block Hooker side exhaust sets, one is chrome and one set is black, I plan on using the black set for my 72.

If you want a chrome set locally I would sell the chrome set for 1400$

It is brand new in the box.

I am located in Hightstown NJ.

chrome may rust, start to peel and turns blue. stainless doesn't rust but turns yellowish / brown and can be polished out

do yerself a favor n buy from JetHot. heres mine last yr before installing, i polished them 1st to remove residue from jethot coating. i love chrome but never again on my hooker headers n sidepipes, they start rusting after 4yrs even though my garage is carpeted n the vette doesn't see rain and the headers turn colors upon startup which jethot doesn't.

You will be way happier with coated ones!! i ran the **** out of my 68 4 speed and was wearing shorts and leaned in to get something from the storage and felt my shin get hot and jumped back (was in shorts by the way) and it was my leg rubbing on the side pipe if it had been chrome or SS i would have peeled a few layers of skin off!!!
i have a set of ceramic coated headers from jet hot on my chevelle that i have had for 10 yrs and they still look like the day i bought them!
