From: Kansas City, MO ...I'd like to go fishing and catch a fishstick. That'd be convenient. - Mitch Hedberg
I bought a carb and the shipping was $18. When the box got here the shipping price was actually $19.xx. Looks like I actually made out better.
I think with the new price changes for the sellers you will continue to see shipping prices rise. It's my understanding that eBay doesn't take their cut out of shipping costs.
I ship electronics (AV gear) all over the US and Fedex cost aren't THAT high.
Most recently sent a customer intercom master to W. Texas from NC via Fedex. Shipping was all of $10.50. And that item weighed quite a bit more than a set of seatbelts....
And while I'm at it....
This same outfit charges for handling. Most companies have UPS/Fedex pick up. There is NO handling.
Surprising that most individuals selling do not charge for their handling time...
I alway set a flat shipping price so there are no surprises. I try to get it close, but many times I lose money on shipping. I never charge for the boxes, expensive tape, time for packing, packaging material and bubble wrap, labels, gas to the post office, ebays charges, or paypal charges. However, buyers always count every penny of the shipping and think you are stealing from them. It's interesting though, like yesterday when I had a large part I guessed shipping at $20, turned out I mailed to California and it cost $30. My guess is none of the penny-counting whiners will email me back to say they will pay the extra, will they?
If the posted shipping is too much, then don't bid and keep the whiny "offers" to yourself.

If someone is selling something and the mark-up is not that much, they have to cover all costs. Its a profit gig. When people sell something they are in it to make money, not lose. You have to understand that boxes, tape, and TIME cost money. also, as stated before, PayPAl and Ebay take a cut. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but I can't agree with you on this one. I too have lost money by setting a low flat rate for shipping.
I'm not against flat shipping rate if they are reasonable...and i dont fuss if the shipping turns out a little bit low compared to what I pay.
I for one when I sold stuff on e-bay simply said buyer pays actual shipping costs...I have to get the buyers address anyway and my M.O was photograph item, post item, box/package item, wiegh item..
When item sells i contact seller and get address (log into internet and get exact shipping cost from UPS) takes all of 20 seconds. i know size of box and weight... that cost is then added to sale price - money exchanges - no worries.
What I take gross exception to is the sellers who extort 5-9 times the actual shipping cost from you. of course i simply dont bid on those items
That's a gimmick used by some sellers. They used to try and sell something for 9.99 and shipping 99.00. That way they can get what they want out of the item if you don't read the shipping fees first. They call it shipping AND HANDLING. From what I understand, ebay cracked down on that a little recently.
This one doesn't sound THAT bad. Maybe just doesn't know what to charge for shipping and making a guess so he won't be on losing end but since he said FIRM, I think he is just padding his pockets.
My wife sells things on ebay pretty much fulltime. Boxes and tape, etc is just part of doing that kind of business. Rarely does she lose anything on the sell. Even if they want to include that cost it's only a couple of bucks. Bottom line, for many it's just a gimmick to keep from paying any fees.

Flat shipping to the US from Canada is all but impossible. Depending on the region being shipped to, the price varies drastically especially on larger items. In all of my Ebay pages I beg buyer to contact me before hand to get a shipping quote. Then like others in this thread, I go to Canada post, put in the numbers and BAM there's your number. I charge that value in USD. I lose a little there but its all good. The shipping calculator on Ebay works well too if you are honest about the details when you set up your page.
Ebay and Paypal take their bit, but I can live with that. Its still the greatest way to feed the vette need...since I've been banned from the chequing account.
I have noticed a lot of “last chance before it goes to e-bay” posts on this forum and because I have to much time on my hands ,I follow some of them to E-bay.Selling for much less.On e-bay you at least have options if you don’t receive your packages.Should something go wrog on this forum ,well……..
Awhile ago a seller on the forum was misquoting store prices to suit his own needs (example Corvette Americas price $42.89 when it was really 21.99) I corrected him a few times ,he reported me to a moderator and my corrections posts were pulled for Interfering With Sale. What about the members he was tryng to scam?
Bottom line :Leave appropriate feedback on e-bay to possibly help the next guy decide whether or not they want to purchase from a particular seller.
I had $100 for shipping a set of seats and was criticized on this forum. Actual price? $132, not including pkging. I've done almost 300 transactions and the freight calculator has been right twice, maybe.
ebay gets a listing fee, final value fee, and Pay Pal gets a transaction fee. Figure in my time to box and take to the counter, it cost me money. At least they're out of my garage. All the complainers need to sell something over there and figure out what they really "made". The constant crying about price is why everything is made in China now. The only thing left to cry about is being unemployed. /:\
Not defending some of the scoundrels that charge overpriced shipping, but the rates have gone up sharply. I just shipped a 2 pound package UPS, two days away and it was over $9.00. There are fuel surcharges, residential delivery charges, even "boonie's" charges(that's what I call them, they charge extra for way out of the way deliveries too!). It's gone way up!
EBay is buyer beware. Most sellers give you the rate up front. If you buy from them knowing what they're charging for shipping, then you can't complain. Some sellers use that shipping fee to recoupe margin. When I sell on Ebay, I usually give a flat fee. That fee includes the furthest possible shipment, box, tape, packing, my time, and another 10%. Never had anyone complain, and only once have I had something arrive at the buyer broken(because of shipper). When people abuse the system, that's when problems start. You have the right to mention overcharged shipping in your feedback.
With all these additional fees and time and expenses ebay sellers have ,Why don’t you build it into your price??Instead of taking advantage of an unsuspecting buyer.
I don’t go to Wallmart and pick something up for $9.99 ,get to the check out and pay for the store clerks time ,rent on shelf space, stores profit margin, hydro to run there cash registers ect. It is built into the cost that is on the price tag.
Yep, people try to profit on shipping to circumvent Ebay's fees. One smart thing that Ebay recently did was to allow you sort items on price + s/h. That makes all those < 1 lbs items with $40 in shipping charges go all the way down to the bottom of the list. I've noticed a sharp decline in sellers trying to shaft buyers on shipping since they implemented that.
I sell a lot on eBay and I get a bit frosted at the buyers who complain shipping is too much. I charge actual shipping as well. Shipping is not cheap anymore! Ask for the size of the carton and the weight. You can go to UPS or USPS and enter this and get the cost. Beware shipping is not cheap anymore and even a small package at UPS is at least $5-6. Beware UPS includes insurance, USPS does not. I had one guy whining that shipping was too much even though it was actual UPS. I obliged him and I saved him $1.50 with USPS and he lost the insurance which I told him and asked him to accept in email. The bottom line if the belts have some weight is that this may not be unreasonable. I will say though that some sellers will play a game on the pricing....low balling the price but then up the shipping. This allows them to show up on Buy.com, etc. as the lowest price, but when adding on the shipping their price may in reality be more expensive. On eBay always ask for the weight early in the bidding and double check the shipping charge. It is irritating when someone bids, bids, bids, wins and then whines afte ward you are charging too much shipping. eBay is the world's largest flea market and you have to knowledgable and sensible or you can get caught up in the auction frenzy and lose all common sense. Also beware that sometimes UPS is cheaper, sometimes USPS. If you have to ship to a more remote area UPS will charge more as they may have to run a truck with minimal deliveries where USPS has a facility in every town.....probably why they lose monye while everyone else makes money.....
