Default Replace '70 Parking Brake Handle?

The black plastic part of my parking brake handle is broken ... when I pull up on it, it separates, but goes back to original position when I release the brake. Can this plastic part be glued ... if so, what kind should I use? Can this part be removed and replaced ... if so, how, and where can I get a replacement? Or, do I replace the whole handle mechanism? Any member experience with this issue woud be appreciated.

If it is an original parking brake handle the reproductions are different. The cross hatch pattern on the handle is not reproduced. If that is important to you then you need to look to repair it. If it does not then replace it with a repro that is available from most parts vendors. The replacements are almost always the entire mechanism.

I have not disassembled this unit so if you want to repair it you need to take the whole unit out and try to find out what is wrong with it. It sounds like whatever holds it together( glue or screws) needs replacement. When you depress the button you depress a spring that may be putting pressure on the plastic handle causing it to flex. When the button is released the spring expands and falls back in place hence the handle returns to original form. This is a guess because I have not disassembled this part. Perhaps someone who has done this will chime in.

The brake still works even though the plastic part is actually broken into 2 pieces ... that's why my question on glue. A repro is not an option because I know they were not close enough to original in the area of the checkered pattern. I've seen a few used OEM complete assemblies on the internet, but wasn't sure if a whole assembly was my only replacement option. And, if glue will hold, I'd like to go that route ... I've got nothing to lose. Thanks.

Go here. The handle has the correct cross hatch pattern. I just went to look at mine and it looks the same.

i got 1 off ebay that was original for 45 bucs in excellent cond.i looked for around 4 months till i found a nice one. my handle was cracked too. you can buy handle separate from aftermarket dealers but its almost same price as whole assembly and much more work to change. you can get aftermarket handles or whole ***. with correct grip. just make sure its not the smooth handle one like newer c3s. i changed mine a couple weeks ago and its really easy but there is a bolt behind council you can access through pass. side glove box. its a 3/8. you aslo gotta drop em. brake cable to release tension. very easy job. if your gonna do pm me and ill help you, nutsy.

Thanks for the info, and your offer to help ... I'll take you up on that once I make a final decision on repair / replace. Did I see a thread or post of yours recently about a front license plate holder? I have an extra one off a '71 that needs sanding and repainting. If you still need one ... pm me. Thanks, and by the way, I love the Warbird Yellow ... mines Daytona Yellow.

70,
I looked at the new reproduction at Carlisle last August. The grip looks very good and the chrome does too. Nutsy is right, there have been some around that are sold as being correct but are correct for later years.
Regards,
Alan

PS: I the chrome is good on yours glue is certainly worth a try.
