I finally got my carpet in, storage compartment done, and ready to install the seats (a friend of mine did them, and they look great). I'm turning my attention to the steering wheel next. I'm looking at some pretty nice Grant steeing wheels and was wondering if anyone has installed on in a '76. I also need to know if any Grant steering wheel will work as long as the right adapter kit is used.
I currently have a Grant on my '79. Of course mine also has a tilt/tele and it currently does NOT lock in place. If you have a Tilt/tele I know of no way to lock the tele in place.

That doesn't sound good!! I was told that I would loose the tele function, but that doesn't bother me at all. I just want something getter looking that that janky old steering wheel that is in there.

I was under the impression that Vega wheels were not installed on Tilt and Tele columns. If you DO have a T/T column I suggest getting a Corvette correct steering wheel from a different year or an after market vendor that makes factory fit wheels.

I reallly want an aftermarket steering wheel. I have searched high and low and can't find a vendor that sales direct fit steering wheels for a 1976 (I have seen wheel for both '75 and '76 and the always say they are not for '76).
That's correct, you won't find one as far as we know. You have to change a few parts in your column. Not that big a deal if you follow Jim Shae's instructions. Just money. There was mention of a C4 wheel working but I don't think that's what you want.

I have seen a Grant wheel that I really want to use. I have contacted Grant and am going to get the adapter kit. I'm more worried about that tele not locking in place with an aftermarket wheel. Can anyone else confirm this issue with using an aftermarket wheel?

Grant offers an adapter for a tilt/tele GM column, and you should also look into part #4001, a 1" adapter from the hub to wheel, the usual ones on the Grant wheels are 2" and too large for a 'Vette, 1" will retain the stock postion, The 'Signiture' Wheels offer the best selection imho, that's what I'm running, and am quite pleased. You can change out the steering wheel on a 76 without purchasing everything to convert to a 75 or earlier configuration. Eckler's sells an adapter that mounts a typical corvette wheel onto a 76 column. You do loose the telescopic feature, but it does lock in place. Just put the star shaped bolt that is in the center of the locking ring back into the column and tighten it with a screw driver. It is not loose at all, you just can not adjust the height.

That's about how I did it. Except I replaced the star bolt with a couple of set screws - the first one locks the tele in place, the second one "jams" the first to ensure it doesn't back out.
I purchased the adaptor and ring from Eckler's 5 years ago, but I can't find it on their website at the moment. I have no idea if it is the same one that Grant offers, but I can find the part number if you need.
