I know this is an old thread but just wondering the best method, soda blast, media blast, razor blade, sanding OR?
Not looking to start a debate just wondering what’s new and best now. My car looks very plastic so I am guessing enamel and not BC/CC. Defiantly not lacquer. Thx in advance.
I used the standard stripper from lowes and needed razor blades too. Doesn't seem to touch the glass. The long bonding strips the razor blades will dig in to when scraping softened paint. I have a few nick's to fix when I get back to stripping when the weather breaks.
I've seen soda-blasted cars and I wasn't impressed. I wouldn't have it done to a car I was restoring. It may be 'easy' for an owner to do, but that's about it. It's aggressive on the fiberglass and 'rounds' the otherwise crisp edges on the fenders.
I stripped my car with regular stripper in 2 leisurely days of work, taking breaks, long lunches and time with the family. About a dozen coats of paint/primer, etc. Don't apply stripper on the urethane front/rear ..or if you do, don't let it sit very long. It can and will likely attack and stretch and damage the rubber. You can try it, but do it in small sections and clean and neutralize regularly ..don't let sit on the urethane very long. It might be ok if you do that.
it seems some people are against paint stripper. i can see why but if used correct i think its the way to go..the razor blade method seems good as long as the paint comes off nice and your not gouging the fiberglass allover.
i bought all the blades and tried the razor method on 2cars didnt work.....
i used paint stripper on both my cars, i would do a panel at a time, rinse with water.. then laquor thinner, no problems down the line so far. easy to want to get ahead of your self, just take the time and it should be all good
I agree, I'd just use regular stripper too and not think twice about it. You'll get a feel for how long you need to leave it on to remove the # coats of paint you have. I'd try to preserve and keep the original GM black primer (if it's still there). If you don't go through the original GM black you don't have to worry about the stripper issues. Also, once you have it cleaned off and neutralized, let it sit a couple weeks to off-gas.
