One suggestion I can offer is avoid the black urethane if he was considering black as a color. They told me the main complaint w/ it was it kinda has a slight brown tinge in the sunlight, well it does, it's more than slight and I regret using it on my truck now.

I wet sanded w/320 and primed with Duplicolor spray cans prior to painting, (about $50.) I wet sanded primer w/ 400, thats kinda light, 320 is better for a good adheasion (so far no problems).

I did it peice meal, cab and bed first as my booth was a primitive homemade deal and its easier incase you have any problems. Dust and bugs are the main concern for anyone not using a good booth, tweezers are good to have handy as well

Learning how to tell when the first coat has "flashed" is very important before adding the second coat, 3rd coat.

Don't let a heavy cloud of overspray build up to much in the work area, its dangerous and I've been told it can flash fire, have plenty of ventilation.

Hang a chain from the exaust system to the ground, I learned this after the fact, has to do w/ static disipation. Also wet down the area before shooting the job, it holds down and catches some airborn dust.

A decent paint should run around $300-350 from last years quotes I got. He should find all he needs to know on the net for extra tips.
Before he starts spraying the truck, have a large piece of cardboard handy to adjust the gun on first. Definatly a good respirator and full body covered.

Painting a car is a fun, rewarding experience, if all goes well

Go this site. It's run by an auto painter.

If your dad plans on using base coat clear coat paint, he needs to use a full respiratory setup. The paint fumes are toxic.
