Does anyone know how the rear vent works? (1969 coup) I see an air actuator with a vacuum hose, but what triggers it to open or close?

With the engine running, set the heater to full cold and the other selecotr to anything but off. The door should open.

I thought if you selected any vent position with the temp to full cold the doors stayed open. Then if you wanted to add any heat, the doors go closed to keep heat in. At least that is how I think it works on mine. Its been a long time since I have played with it. Any heat dialed/added closes the vent doors.

I agree and so does the GM service manual, for a '70 anyway. Just rebuilt mine while doing a full interior revamp.

It really wasn't as bad as it looks to be, being a vert really helps for access. It was a forced repair to eliminate a Bubba fix. Previous owner thought it was necessary to plug the drain box holes and the tubes were missing; well guess where the water goes if you do this? Yep, right thru the astrovent doors into the rear interior. Now the drains are fixed and everything else was removed, de-rusted and painted, and re-installed. Just finished laying the last piece of Dynamat Extreme last night and the new Al Knock carpet set is due next week.

So then, there no way to close the vent as long as the temp selector is set to cold? No wonder mine stays open, I never turn on the heat. Should it be ratteling like a can of nails in the open position or does mine just need to be re-built.
